Lake Bluff
Caroline Magdelene Shebenik (nee Rutell), of Waukegan, IL passed away peacefully on February 13, 2021. Caroline was 99. She was born in Waukegan on July 6, 1921 and attended St. Bartholomew Grade School in Waukegan. As a freshman in High School, she took the train to Chicago to study under the Lithuanian Sisters of St. Casimir, but the High School closed after her first year. She then transferred to Waukegan High School where she was a member of the History Club and Le Cercle Francais; she graduated in 1938. She married her loving husband William A. Shebenik at St. Bartholomew Church in Waukegan on July 24, 1943. They had one son, Bill. Carol was a devoted wife and mother; was a terrific homemaker, a fabulous cook and baker; and she maintained a wonderful vegetable garden and a beautiful rose garden. She served on the Archconfraternity of Christian Mothers; an organization that sprang up from the heartfelt needs of a group of mothers in France in 1850. Under the patronage of Mary as Our Mother of Sorrows, the members encourage vocations, organize activities, recite the rosary, visit the sick and help the needy. Carol exemplified the mission of this organization by encouraging her son to attend Quigley Seminary and Loyola University, by praying the Rosary daily, and by her dedicated service as a minister of Holy Communion to the sick and homebound. Carol was also a member of KSKJ St. Joseph's Lodge #53, and a past member of Mother of God and Queen of Peace Churches. She is survived by many nieces and nephews: Donna (Larry) Archibald, Julie (Mark) Hamby, Lucille (Edward) Jurgaitis, Jean (Mike) Kana, Mary Ann Krolak, Marcia (James) McNamara, Rosa Prosen, Brian Sebenik, Richard (Cheryle) Sebenik, Edward (Terry) Shebenik, James Shebenik, John (Mary) Shebenik, Steve Shebenik, Jennifer (Tom Bettge) Snell, and Laurie (Frank) Stanerson.
